Tonight I installed Windows 8 at my old laptop. The install process went fine, but from there it all went down hill. The first thing that bothered me was that you need to choose a color theme when you install Windows 8, I can live with that, but I don't think it's a necessary thing to pull the user through when installing the damn thing! When it was installed and started up it was time to fool around.
The first app I started up was the messages app, this worked fine, I started up a chat with a friend, and after some messages, I asked where the messages were received, as she doesn't have Windows 8. She then told me she received the messages I sent on Skype, this surprised my a bit, as my Skype on my other computer didn't sync the message, but that's fine too, I didn't really expect anything of the system, as Windows 8 is new, and the message system could be a new implementation.
Next up was the mail app, when I started the mail app, it asked what type of mail account I wanted to use, I marked the POP3 radio button, and clicked the "next" button, and the next thin made my head explode! The pop up dialog told me, that the mail app does not support POP3 accounts, I was shocked! We live in 2013 and the mail app have an option which can't be used with the app, that's just f***ing great (sorry for my bad language). Well I tried adding the account manually, and what happened was that the mail app unexpectedly closed. I opened it again, tried to add the account manually, and the same thing happened. I thought what the heck, and tried as a last option to add my Google mail, to see how the mail app worked and looked like. I typed in my credentials for my Google account, clicked next and got the message that the account wasn't available.
Last thing I tried was the camera app, and here the experience got even worse. When launching the camera app, the system asked whether I would give the app access to use my webcam and microphone or not, I of cause clicked yes, as I was in the middle of trying the system, and there was a reason for why I started the app. When the picture from the webcam showed up, the thing was upside down... I checked around the app to see if it was possible to rotate the picture 180 degrees, but found no option to do this. All this just made me so disappointed that I turned off the laptop (which also took some time, cause Microsoft did a great job of hiding the shutdown option) so all in all, Windows 8 needs some improvements, or at least the apps does!
